Crown and Bridge Treatment
Crowns are often called ‘caps’ and are a protective shell that covers a tooth. They are often indicated if a tooth has multiple large fillings, or if a tooth has a large break in it. They are also recommended after a root canal is performed as the root canal tends to make a tooth brittle, and the cap will prevent the tooth from breaking. They can also be done to improve esthetics, especially on front teeth that are chipped.
A bridge is used in an area where a tooth is missing. The two adjacent teeth are prepared for crowns, and then caps are put on these teeth with a fake tooth attached in the middle to replace the missing tooth.
Implants
Once a tooth is lost the best and closest replacement is a dental implant. A titanium screw is placed in the bone, and once it has healed and osseointegrated, or fused to the bone, a regular crown or cap can be placed on top. The tooth functions as a regular tooth and can be flossed, brushed, and professionally cleaned like a regular tooth
